Mend a plate with the art of kintsugi

with Annelies Nuy

Apron Studio 2h

Break a plate, then repair it in gold with Annelies, and learn kintsugi: the Japanese art that makes imperfection the most beautiful part

Your own kintsugi-repaired plate, mended with gold lacquer

The kintsugi technique, ready to use on broken pieces at home

A different way of looking at breakage, repair, and resilience

Workshop in detail

Break a plate, then make it beautiful again with Annelies, using kintsugi, the Japanese technique of repair that dates back to 15th-century Japan. The workshop opens quietly: Annelies walks you through the idea behind kintsugi before you begin. Then you symbolically break a plate of your own, a small ritual before the real work starts. You spend the rest of the session patiently piecing the shards back together, sealing each crack with gold lacquer instead of hiding it. The break becomes the most visible, most valuable part of the piece. You leave with the plate you repaired, and with a technique you can use again on anything broken at home.
